On 26 Feb we held Whaia te Hauora event of wellness at Aotahi, University of Canterbury. Whaia te Hauora was born out of the whānau that attended the Te Pūtahitanga symposium. There was a lot of good information and ideas around whānau well-being, however there was little action taken by our whānau. From this we took an approach to start connecting with whānau to engage in their own wellness. Whānau enjoyed a seminar run by Brainwave Trust Aotearoa about unraveling the teenage brain – fantastic information on teenagers delivered in a way that everyone can engage and understand. We also had information from the “All right?” Campaign, Victim Support, the 5 Ways of Well-being and Thursdays in Black. All of these are free resources that are available for whānau to access. We hope to run similar events throughout the year. [Read more…]

In the pre-dawn hours of 24 June volunteers from Te Rūnanga o Waihao arrived at Waimate Main School to set up the gas kai-cookers, pack the food in and start the process of preparing a meal for the community.

As the tamariki of the Waimate District start arriving at the Waimate High School, there was excitement in the air. People were clustered in little groups sorting out last minute arrangements. Then the Tahu FM vehicle was seen arriving, as Rocky and Sista — the breakfast crew from our Iwi Radio Station — returned again to MC the day. [Read more…]

It was with great pride that the McLean/Thomas whānau were able to be there to celebrate Caley Ngarimu Te Wera McLean (Ngāi Tahu, Te Ātiawa, Ngāti Porou) graduate with a Bachelor of Education in physical education and Māori. Titiro ki ngā tamariki katoa

This April we held the first wānanga of many. Our rangatahi ran this to find out what our tamariki and rangatahi would like to learn and do on the marae.

We spent most of our time down at the river, which was a hit with everyone, even in the darkness of night. We were lucky enough to have Sophie Allen from Working Waters Trust come and join us. She shared her wealth of knowledge about the river along with a few tips on catching tuna and inaka. When we returned in the morning our nets were full to the children’s delight. We spent the rest of our short time together learning waiata, watching a movie on the big projector, learning paki whitu, playing outdoors and bonding over a card game or two. [Read more…]
