Rigby-Paku-Pohio reunion

Dr Terry Ryan giving a copy of the whakapapa to Erena Rigby.

Dr Terry Ryan giving a copy of the whakapapa to Erena Rigby.

As part of the Rigby-Paku-Pohio reunion this year, Dr Terry Ryan came to speak to the whānau about their Ngāi Tahu whakapapa, in particular the Rigby line.

In this modern age, to have Terry stand and present such important information without any technical assistance, and to pull facts and figures from his head, showed to the whānau how important it is to have him sharing our whakapapa.

The whānau were amazed at the way he was able to bring alive our tīpuna and put together the journey of Mary Susan Whitehouse (Merehana) from Stewart Island to Ahuriri where she met and married William Joseph Rigby.

Thank you Uncle Terry for taking time out of your annual holidays and speaking to our whānau. Everyone agreed that you were the highlight.

Marama Pankhurst Stirling (Charlie) (Ngāi Tahu, Ngāti Mamoe, Te Whānau-a-Apanui) was post-humously inducted into the NZ Marital Arts Hall of Fame on 2 November, in recognition of his personal achievement, dedication and outstanding service to the martial arts community.

“Charlie was a very reserved person. He spoke few words in a low, husky voice but he was a very astute instructor. Charlie travelled to Japan in the early sixties, around the time of the Tokyo Olympics 1964, and trained at the Kodokan (Judo Academy). Technically, he was one of the best in New Zealand at a time when most people outside Japan were learning martial arts very badly from books. [Read more…]

Congratulations to the kapa haka group, who were rewarded for all their hard work and effort during rehearsals with an awesome performance at Te Atakura. This event was greatly enjoyed by all who made the trip.

The past month seems to have flown by and with Christmas just around the corner we wonder where the year has gone.

Over the past month executive and staff have been engaged in a number of activities in addition to their ongoing hui commitments, such as the marae visit from Thornbury School, the Greats and Grans afternoon tea held at Takutai O Te Tītī Marae and the heritage walk, which celebrated 125 years of the Milford Track. Staff, in addition to their office tasks, have been busy preparing for the forthcoming annual general meeting and putting together the annual report.

We are always looking for volunteers to help us with school visits, the marae vegetable garden and any kitchen tasks. So if you think you could help with any of these activities we would really like to hear from you.

Kia ora whānau,
We hope you all had an enjoyable Easter break and were able to catch up and spend time with your whānau over the long weekend. Weather wise, it would be one of the best we can remember. Easter Monday was the first time in a very long time that the Riverton Races had to be cancelled due to a light rainfall and the water not being absorbed into the ground.
