This year in partnership with the Southern Institute of Technology the Hokonui Rūnanga is hosting the Certificate in Te Ara Reo Māori for staff and whānau. We are all enjoying the relaxed atmosphere and awesome opportunity to kōrero Māori together.

Staff and whānau Te Ara Reo Māori class.

Mātauranga

With students starting back, many schools in the area hosted pōwhiri and it was a very busy time for some of our kaumātua and whānau supporting them. The effort put into welcoming the new students and staff at the schools was fabulous and it was a great platform for our rangatahi to showcase tikanga and be inclusive of the whole school.

It was time to refresh or learn basic first aid at the rūnanga this month.

Greetings from Hokonui Rūnanga,
It has been a busy few months here at Hokonui, we have had many groups and organisations make use of our new complex for various hui.

Otago/Southland men’s hui

We recently hosted this hui at our complex, it’s always a pleasure to assist with hui like these. New Zealand is one of the worst countries in the world for family violence – we need to step up and make a change. Men from all walks of life are invited to attend the hui which will focus on how men can take leadership to reduce and prevent family violence in our whānau, our communities and our region. For more information you can visit www.familiesfreefromviolence.org.nz or phone 0800 474 1121.

Chinese Consul-General visit

Jin Zhijian the Chinese Consul-General made a promotional trip to the Hokonui region and visited our rūnanga along with the Gore District Mayor Tracy Hicks and their respective entourage. We were grateful to have the kapa haka group from Longford Intermediate to help welcome them as well as international students from local high schools.

After nearly two years of being hosted by the Salvation Army here in Gore it’s a great feeling to come home. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the Gore Salvation Army for the use of their facilities and for hosting our Kaumātua Health Days. We may not have been able to keep these days running if it weren’t for the support from the Salvation Army and their staff/volunteers.

This year our tamariki rōpū have decided to get together and start fundraising to help koha for a camp they are planning at the end of this year. So far the tamariki have had a great time getting together and doing a car wash and sausage sizzle. It is amazing to help guide and watch them come together to reach a common goal. Krystal and Mere are very proud of the commitment the kids are showing and cannot wait to get to camp with them.
