If we

If we speak words of racism
Then what do we teach
When our young learn
To copy and imitate our speech

If we hide what’s unlovable
How can we face
What’s been hidden
When it’s brought into our space [Read more…]

We have had both a bad and good month, with our mate and then hui, but condolences to all, as the saying goes, cheer up, all will be ok.

Well, as for our ‘hui weeks,’ all is good. We have dear old June’s Birthday and my moko David-Mark, who travelled down from Huntly with his family. So it will be a good two days celebrating. The next day will be a sad one for a whānau who has lost a loved one.

As this is written, today is all celebration at 233 Tuahiwi Road. Tents are going up, cars in and out, children’s toys all getting put up. So busy, a lovely day will be had by all. [Read more…]

Nā Te Ao CD Launch was a huge success and enjoyed by all the whānau who attended. The patron and kaumātua of Whetu Ariki Charitable Trust and one of the few surviving members of Te Whetu Ariki o Kahukura was called onto Tuahiwi Marae by Reimona Crofts and Ranui Ngarimu, who is also a former member of Whetū Ariki.

The launch brought whānau together from Arowhenua, Waihao, Moeraki, Rāpaki and Waitaha who travelled up from their hapū, I would like to extend my gratitude and aroha to you all for travelling so far. Well, here we are again into another fabulous year – although 2016 was a great year when you think back. Condolences to all who have lost loved ones, keep smiling and all will end happy for you! Aroha mai. Now to some gossy. Yes, I had a wonderful Christmas as a matter of fact, don’t remember much about Christmas Day, but that’s another story. I hope you all had a good Christmas, I bet you all did – children and all. All put on the weight, preparing for winter.

Timua launched her CD recently, but she will tell you about it. It would be nice if you all wrote pānui to include in Te Pānui Rūnaka, it would save me plenty. So as the weather is blowing up a storm outside, I think that will be enough for now.

You have three chances in life.
Choices – you must make a choice
Chances – take a chance
Changes – to change your life
.
Luv ya all, till next time. KKK.
Oh, cousin Charlie, I’m a year older now
(49 reversed, not bad eh).

Condolences to whānau who have lost loved ones, we have had a very sad week here in Tuahiwi, but chin up, I know it’s very hard.

Our daughter, Tanya Filia recently graduated from Massey University with a Post Graduate Diploma in Māori Education with distinction. Tanya also has a Diploma in primary teaching and a Bachelor of Education, and was until recently, the principal of Kohukohu Primary School North Hokianga. Her Kāi Tahu whakapapa on her father’s side is to Takaroa Makutu (Te Ngāi Tūāhuriri) and Peti Huntly. Takaroa Makutu was the son of Te Karue who was prominent in defending land rights at Tua Marina (Wairau Incident).

Tanya is heavily involved in her local marae, hapū and rūnanga. As her parents, we feel her achievement is of extra special significance because during her studies she was (and is still) recovering from a grade 4 brain tumour operation. Tanya has had to travel regularly from her home in Ōmāpere, Hokianga for aggressive chemotherapy and radiation treatment at Auckland Hospital. Although Tanya lives with her whānau in Te Tai Tokerau she is fiercely proud of her whakapapa and her Kāi Tahutanga. Nā Wayne and Alecia Robinson.

Who sees the beautiful moments
Deep within their treasure chest
The only feeling felt is love
Consider yourself very blessed
Wonderful to think we’d never grow old
Or never have to turn a page
And we could stay young forever
And not reach a ripe old age
Some don’t even get this chance
Taken on any given day [Read more…]

It’s time again for a bit more chat, but condolences to all who have lost their loved ones. Cheer up honeys, all will be okay again.

As usual, it’s still very busy at the marae and the weather has been so cold in the mornings, but stop moaning Patty, you are out in it at 6.30 in the morning.

We had the Ture Whenua Hui at the marae. What a lovely day that was. We had all the members of Parliament down and what a spread we had. You name it – we had it. Thanks to our kitchen workers, Lyndon, Michelle, Rex, Roger, Robert, Tina and others. Also thanks to Noel, Christine, Maru and all the other people who made it a wonderful day. Our other member from up north – she was so lovely, Nanaia Mahuta. She was just like one of us in the kitchen talking with workers. I even saw her doing the dishes, was so lovely. [Read more…]

Understanding what breast cancer is and how it happens was the topic for Healthy Day at the Pā recently at Tuahiwi Marae.

The day was facilitated by Aroha Reriti-Crofts and Dr Hana Royal, who is from Tuahiwi and currently works at Middlemore Hospital in Auckland. She has a personal mission to reduce the number of Māori women with breast cancer, one woman at a time. So where better than to start at home?

Breast cancer has affected both sides of Hana’s whakapapa and she says Māori women can do a lot to reduce the statistics of woman who die from the disease. [Read more…]
