Weighing 6lkb 11ozs, she is a new toanga for Miriama White and Te Rua Mason, and brand new baby sister for Whakataerangi, Henare and Ani. Ngā mihi whānau, much love to all.

Ngā mihi aroha e te whānau o Kāi Tahu, tēnā koutou katoa. July is here and we are waking up to frosts in the mornings, so I hope everyone is sorted for wood and coal because it has been very cold here. My heart goes out to our poor kids who have to wait for an early bus ride to school. On another note everything is going well up at our marae and things are ticking along nicely.

A special congratulations to Troy Tauwhare, son of John and Mavis Tauwhare of Hokitika. In addition to being a West Coast Heartland Rugby representative, Troy was rewarded for his sparkling form in 2013, by being selected for the Crusader Knights trial and camp at Lincoln University in February. Rūnanga business

Rūnanga hui will be held every second Sunday of each month from 11am-3pm.

My late mother, June Moana Norling (Ngāi Tahu – Ngāti Waewae), passed away on 18 August. Born on 14 June, 1924. She was 89-years-old.

Mum’s maiden name was Lousich. Her father was Rudolph Torlesse Lousich, who drowned when Mum was three months old. Her mother’s maiden name was Iri Pihawi West. Mum was one of five children born to Rudolph Torlesse Lousich. Her Mum remarried and there were two more siblings born. Her stepfather’s name was William ‘Bill’ Feary.

Mum spent her years growing up at Arahura on the West Coast. The family later moved to Wellington. [Read more…]

80th birthday

Hector Walter Tainui was born 10 August 1933 to Tuhuru and Nikau Tainui (née West). Hector and his wife, Hilda, better known as Uncle Spud and Aunty Tilly, have been married for almost 61 years. They are ngā mātua o ngā tamariki tokowaru, three of whom are deceased. In his early years Hector worked in coal mines, as a bushman, in carpentry, bricklaying and plastering, until he joined the Hokitika Band Mills, where he worked for 32 years before retiring. Not one to be idle, Hector then started working with Bill Russell for our Ngāti Waewae Rūnanga. [Read more…]

American students visit Arahura

Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Waewae welcomed a rōpū of American students to Arahura on 29 June. The group visited with Kea Tours. We all enjoyed time together and the visiting students enjoyed trying new foods – especially the pumpkin soup. Afterwards they were taken on a hīkoi to Arahura River to learn about our legends of Poutini and Waitaiki. [Read more…]

For my father, Maurice Westmoreland Lousich whose 94th birthday would have been today (1 March). He died on 12 November, 2012 at Masterton Hospital. Dad was brought up at Arahura Pā. His mother was Iri Te Amokura Pihawai and his father, Rudolph Torlesse Lousich. Maurice and his wife, Betty (deceased), had two children – Raymond Rudolph (deceased) and myself, Lorraine Lousich. Hunter Albany Tauwhare born 31 July.

Matariki Tumahai is very happy and excited to announce the birth of Hunter Albany Tauwhare. Hunter is another gorgeous mokopuna to add to Matariki’s whānau.

Hunter arrived into the world on 31 July at Redcliffe Hospital in Brisbane, Australia, weighing in at 8lb 13 ounces.

Hunter is the first child for Aaron Tauwhare and Kerrie Jones. A wonderful bundle of joy. Congratulations to the whānau. [Read more…]
