On 28 February, Aoife and Niamh welcomed the arrival of their little sister, Ciara Scarlett Goldsmith. True to form Ciara followed in her big sisters’ footsteps tipping the scales at a healthy 9lb 10oz. Ciara is the third girl for Mum, Letitia, and Dad, Shannon. Dad reckons he has seen the writing on the wall and has decided to hang his boots up. [Read more…]

Floods open marae

Over Easter heavy rain caused significant flooding across the South Island and many people heading away for their holidays got stopped at Hampden. The roads were closed due to flooding and Civil Defence asked for the marae to be opened to accommodate the overflow of people stranded.

Eighteen people including three bands on a New Zealand tour and a whānau from Murihiku/Waewae/Tasmania arrived in time for dinner and when the roads re-opened at 10.30 pm they all decided they wanted to stay the night. It was great that Moeraki Marae is being utilised by the community like this, in times of need. [Read more…]

Fish business

Holmes Kindergarten children visited Moeraki Marae to learn about the tuna, history of the area and to see the really big whale bones.

Congratulations to Kare Tipa. After 18 lengthy months, Kare Tipa, mokopuna of Taina Tipa and Clarke Davis, has  overcome huge hurdles and finally achieved the tohu ‘ Te Panekiretanga o Te Reo’ on 15 February. Kare gives all credit and thanks to her late mother Karen Davis Tipa and partner, Jamie Berry. Although these two were unable to celebrate this day with her, their dying wishes were realised through her achievements. Gerard O’Regan is the Te Rūnanga o Moeraki recipient of the Ngāi Tahu Kā Pūtea Scholarship Grant. Gerard is studying for a Doctorate of Philosophy in Anthropology. We wish him well with his studies.

Radio Announcer credited for Community Station

TALENTED radio announcer Brian Hall (Moeraki) is crediting a community station for playing a huge part in his admission to one of New Zealand’s premier broadcasting schools.
